SHE EATS

Today is day 5 of her FIP treatment and things are already starting to look up!

May 5

She did the cutest thing today. I was at a loss for what else I can do, so I did the only thing that was left to do, pray. The door to my room was open, she was sitting on her heated blanket in the hallway. I kneel down, put my hands in the air and ask for help. Not a minute goes by and there she is slowly walking into the room, lays down right in front of me, and just stares away into the abyss. As soon as I was done she got up and went to her little safe space heated blanket, so cute!

Had an interesting call with a gentleman from the University of California where the they have been doing extensive testing on cats with FIP and he gave me some very valuable information.

My concern was the anemia, as the results kept coming in that her red blood cell count was plummeting. We considered a blood transfusion, but where I am, that’s not an easy thing to come by for cats. The only place even remotely close was The University of Guelph and it’s not an easy task to even get in, let alone the cost of such procedure. He advised me that the anemia is not the concern, but the fever, and that he has never seen a transfusion go well with almost no cats making it. The fever needs to stay down as that is the indicator if the medicine is working. If this doesn’t happen within the next 12 hours, the dose needs to be adjusted, but speak with the vets first to get some guidance with dosage.

When the turnaround happens, the cats attitude will change. All the indicators will start coming back to normal (bilirubin, RBC, etc). Fluid will continue to increase in the belly, even when the treatment is working. The fluid can take 10-14 days to start to go down, but the cat should act better when the fever goes down. That is the main indicator of the healing.
